Why Was My TMUA Practice Score Higher Than My Real Result?
A data-led explanation of why a 2023 past-paper score cannot be compared directly with a 2024 or 2025 TMUA result, and how to diagnose the gap properly.
The Short Answer
A 2023 past-paper score and a 2024 or 2025 live TMUA result are not like-for-like measurements. The 2016-2023 papers have published, paper-specific raw-mark conversion tables. The computer-based TMUA introduced in 2024 uses multiple forms, Rasch IRT calibration and post-equating; UAT-UK does not publish a fixed raw-mark conversion table for those live tests. A gap between the two numbers does not, by itself, prove that the live test was mis-scored or that your mathematics suddenly became worse.
This question appears repeatedly in student discussions, including the 2025 TMUA results thread and discussions about the 2025 scoring scale. Community reports identify the question; official reports are the evidence used below.
1. The Scoring Systems Are Different
For an old paper, a raw mark out of 40 maps through that paper's published conversion table. For the current computer-based test, candidate ability and item difficulty are estimated through the Rasch model, different forms are equated, and the result is placed on the 1.0-9.0 scale after the testing window. You therefore cannot take an old statement such as “30/40 was worth X” and assume the same mapping applies to 2024 or 2025.
Use the MioMath TMUA score-conversion page to compare the official 2016-2023 tables with the 2024-2025 MioMath Model ranges. The new-format values come from the MioMath Model, not an official conversion table.
2. Reddit Results Are Not the Score Distribution
People with unusually high or unusually disappointing results have more reason to post. A results thread is therefore useful for discovering concerns, but it is a self-selected sample and cannot tell you how all candidates performed.
| Official cycle | Candidates | Mean | Median | 75th percentile | 90th percentile |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024-25 | 13,855 | 4.20 | 4.0 | 5.2 | 6.5 |
| 2025-26 | 16,092 | 4.28 | 4.1 | 5.3 | 6.7 |
These figures come from the UAT-UK technical reports. Explore the source documents and digitised charts on the TMUA results and percentiles page.
3. Practice Conditions Hide Performance Loss
An old PDF often measures your mathematics under familiar conditions. The live test also measures execution: reading on screen, moving between questions, writing on the supplied noteboard, abandoning a slow question and maintaining accuracy for two consecutive 75-minute papers. Untimed work, pauses between papers, familiar questions and generous review all make a practice score less predictive.
4. Reconstructed Papers Have Uncertainty
The 2024 and 2025 papers available outside the official system are reconstructions, not official public question-paper PDFs. A recalled question can differ in wording, options or difficulty from the live form. Use the 2024 and 2025 resources to practise the current format, but do not treat their scaled score as an official result.
How to Diagnose Your Own Gap
- Compare raw accuracy first. Record Paper 1 and Paper 2 correct answers separately instead of comparing only scaled scores.
- Use strict conditions. Complete both 75-minute papers consecutively, on screen, without a calculator, and with the same kind of limited writing surface.
- Tag every lost mark. Separate missing knowledge, failed reasoning, misread wording, algebra error, time abandonment and guessing.
- Retest the cause, not the question. After reviewing a mistake, solve a different question requiring the same idea. Remembering one answer is not transfer.
- Use a range for 2024-2025. A model interval is more honest than a single pseudo-precise score.
What the Gap Does and Does Not Mean
A lower live score can reveal a real execution problem, but it cannot be diagnosed from two scaled numbers alone. The useful comparison is your raw accuracy by paper, under matched conditions, together with an error log. That turns “Why did my score collapse?” into a set of specific problems you can train.

TMUATMUA October 2026 Recap: What the Recall Data Actually Shows About Form Overlap, Repeats and Results Day
Every October 2026 form came from one shared international question bank, and overlap between forms was wildly uneven: about 35%, about 10%, and one form with 0% overlap. Cross-year repeats were real but small (3-7%). What that means for difficulty, circulating answer keys, and the wait for mid-November results.

Our prediction, read from the 2024 and 2025 global papers: Paper 1 will carry a heavy load of surds and algebra, and Paper 2 will lean on logic but is manageable once you are used to it. Plus what Oxford moving from the MAT to the TMUA changes, and what to practise before you sit.
